In the land of Nova the royal family are the most important residents, so when Princess Evelyn poisons herself with a love potion, a wild hunt ensues to find the top alchemist in the land who can cure her. Samantha Kemi has always loved mixing potions and comes from a long line of famous potion mixers, so she soon realises that this is her chance to shine. Can she cure the princess in time? Or will someone else save the day yet again?

This YA book is one of the most compelling  stories that I have recently read. It is full of adventure, excitement and a splash of love. I really enjoyed the character development throughout the book and especially the relationships between Samantha and her family, friends and her enemy/love interest Zain Aster.

For me, the main negative of this book was that it started very slowly and so it took a while to build into the real start of the story. However, I loved it once I pushed through a chapter or two, and then I really started to enjoy it.

The book made me smile – it was light and I love a good bit of magic, so if you like that sort of thing it’s definitely a good read!

Overall it’s safe to say I’m eager to purchase The Potion Diaries: Royal Tour, the sequel to this incredible book.

The Potion Diaries by Amy Alward is a Young Adult book published by Simon & Schuster Children’s UK. It was chosen by Zoella to be in her 2016 Book Club, exclusive to WHSmith.
