The Big Brew Campaign – Mental Health Awareness Week 2016

The Big Brew

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people in England will experience mental health problems in any given year. Mental health is an issue which is often stigmatised, as well as being degraded by idle comments such as ‘I’m so depressed’ when a person is merely feeling a bit down one day. It is equally important to remember that both men and women suffer from depression, both young and old.

So I would like to take this opportunity to promote the Mersey Care NHS Trust campaign, ‘The Big Brew.’ The Big Brew campaign was originally launched by Mersey Care on Monday 19th January 2015, known as the most depressing day of the year, with the aim of turning ‘Blue Monday’ into ‘Brew Monday.’ The Big Brew campaign is an ongoing movement with a strong ambition to shatter the stigma of suicide and mental health. The huge step of speaking out about mental illness is all based around the simple, yet effective idea of having a brew with someone who is willing to listen. Mersey Care NHS Trust are asking for everyone’s help to support the Big Brew campaign by arranging your own Big Brew event and talking openly and honestly about mental health and depression with a family member, friend or colleague who you think may be suffering in silence. Offering your support through the form of a conversation, a cup of tea and a helping hand may appear to be an extremely simple concept, but it is one that has been proven to make a real difference. With Mersey Care’s Big Brew slogan declaring: ‘to some it’s a tea bag. To others it’s a lifeline.’
