SOCIETY SELECT: LGBT+ Society
Do you identify as having a nonnormative sexual, romantic or gender identity?
If so, we are here to represent you.
The LGBT+ Society aims to promote and protect the interests, safety and welfare of all members of the Guild who self-identify as having a non-heterosexual or romantic identity, or a non-cisgender identity. We also aim to bring our members together in a safe and fun social environment, and campaign for change.
To this end, we run regular socials, both drinking (e.g. bar crawls) and non-drinking (e.g. games nights and talks) in an effort to appeal to all. We are always looking for new ideas for events, so feel free to get in touch if you have any suggestions.
This semester, we are hosting weekly Courtyard meetups, followed by our series of Identity Talks, which aim to spread awareness around the variety of different identities, some history and the issues faced by our community. These meetups occur from 5pm on Wednesdays in the Courtyard, and the full schedule of talks will be announced soon.
Unless otherwise stated, all our events are open to everyone, regardless of how you identify or if you are a member of the society. This includes both LGBT+ students and allies.
Our regular socials culminate in our final social of the year, in which we raise money for charity. Last year, we hosted “Let’s have a Kiki” at 24 Kitchen Street, during which raised £426.12 for the Michael Causer Foundation.
We also campaign for change, both within the university and in the wider community. If you got asked your preferred name when you applied for uni, you’ve already seen some of our past campaigns’ work in action. This year, our main campaign is our Sex+ Campaign that will be occurring in November, during which we will be hosting a series of talks by a variety of organisations about sexual health, sex education, HIV / AIDs and Kink.
We are also the winner of the Guild Award for Biggest Impact on the University Community (2018) and Society of the Year (2017). We hope to build on these successes in 2018/2019, and we would love you to join us!
