PREVIEW: Sweeney Todd at the Royal Court

The Birkenhead Operatic Society Trust (BOST) will be performing Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street between the 4th and 6th of October at the Royal Court Theatre in the city centre. Last year, BOST performed a sell-out production of Oliver! which gained excellent reviews, and are returning this year to present Sweeney Todd, the famous musical which has collectively won 8 Tony Awards and Olivier Awards.

This musical thriller set in the Victorian era tells the story of Sweeney Todd who returns to London to reprise his trade as a talented barber, as well as settling an old score. When he meets Mrs Lovett, the somewhat quirky owner of a struggling pie shop on Fleet Street, he’s encouraged to set up his barber shop above her store. The story is anticipated to feature a great mix of comedy, romance and drama, and will prove to be an emotional roller-coaster.

Accompanied by (Academy Award winner) Stephen Sondheim‘s dark yet comedic score, Sweeney Todd  is awaited to be a thrilling yet fun night at the theatre.

This performance has been on my radar for a while, as I realised Sweeney Todd is performed less frequently than a lot of other musicals, so this is an exciting opportunity to see it be performed on our doorstep. The entire company have been preparing for the show for several months, with a full team effort including performers, production team, wardrobe department and backstage crew and it is always brilliant to see a team effort come together on the night. This performance will also take place on the same weekend as the Giant Spectacular, so come to the theatre and take advantage of the wide range of cultural events that Liverpool has to offer!
