PREVIEW: SOUL II SOUL @ Liverpool Philharmonic – 20/10/18
R&B pioneers Soul II Soul are set to play Liverpool Philharmonic Saturday 20th October as a part of their landmark UK tour, celebrating 30 years of their iconic debut album, Club Classics Vol. 1.
To gain a little perspective of how influential the album was upon its release in 1989, the album sold in excess of 900,000 copies in the UK alone, certifying it triple platinum, and double platinum in the US with sales in excess of 2 million. The album went to number one in the UK, as did the single ‘Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)’, which was the fifth best-selling single of the year. The album and single also topped the US R&B charts, whilst being a top 20 album and top ten single on the mainstream Billboard charts.
Soul II Soul initially gained attraction as a sound system, before adopting a DIY attitude, much like the beginnings of punk, and made underground music mainstream, leading in the late 80s warehouse scene to internationally pioneering black British music, not seen since the US influence of Motown. It is no surprise that the band has sold over 10 million albums worldwide, and main frontman Jazzie B was awarded an OBE for services to music, in addition to an Ivor Novello Award for Inspiration, as “the man who gave British black music a soul of its own”.
The double Grammy Award winning and five-time Brit Award nominated band will play 12 dates throughout the UK in October and November 2018, and backed by a stunning production, these legendary and highly-influential artists are not ones to be missed.
